How did you begin your baking journey? This is our story.
As the saying goes, “From little things, big things grow”. When I started Bakelife back in 2011 with my best friend Amel, it was to share our new-found love of baking. She lived in Sydney, where I grew up. And I lived in Asia, where she grew up. We were apart but close in our hearts. Bakelife was our way of keeping in touch, and sharing our baking journey while on different parts of the globe. Back then I did most of the blogging (actually, all of it). Amel found it easier to upload her photos to our Bakelife Facebook page. She loved baking cupcakes and became quite the cupcake queen.
I liked experimenting with savoury muffins, cookies and bread.
Fast forward to today, after a loooong break from baking – I’m back in the kitchen again (though still waiting for Amel!). After the shock of seeing all my old recipes and content disappear at the hands of the hosting company, I resurrected Bakelife earlier this year, and with a couple of friends, we started sharing our bakes. But it was really Hero who inspired me to open up the blog to anyone who loves baking. “Why not create a place for home bakers all over the world to come together and share their baking journeys?”, he said. And so that’s what I did.
Bakelife is a home for anyone who wants to share their baking adventures, love of baked goods and home-bakes. Every home baker began somewhere and that’s what connects us all.
We love our Bakelife community, and to celebrate our love of the art and science of baking, we’re holding our first contest on Instagram!
Whether you’re a buttercream piping whiz, or still learning how to perfect your sourdough crumb, we want to find out what your first bake was.
- Post a photo of your first bake (or one of your earliest bakes) on Instagram and tell us about it.
- Hashtag #bakelifebeginnings in your post.
- Tag Bakelife (@we_bakelife) in your story and follow us on Instagram.
Just make sure you have a public profile on Instagram when you upload the photo so we can see it. We’ll pick our four favourites based on your photo and baking story.
Your #bakelifebeginnings can be a complete bake fail, a baking success or an absurd creation. Like this Tim Tam Puff Pastry oddity Amel made.
Wrapping some Tim Tims in the leftover puff pastry from her chicken pot pies may have been a brainwave at the time, but it was such a bad idea in hindsight (think gooey Tim Tam mess). That’s what made it SO GOOD.
1st prize – A handmade Brooke Wade Wood Cherry Serving Board & Walnut Mixing Spoon with gold rings. Both are created in her little Brooklyn studio and made from reclaimed, traceable materials. They are designed to last a lifetime and each piece has a story to tell, just like every home baker.
2nd & 3rd prize – One of two copies of Martha Collison’s new book – Twist by Martha Collison. We love Martha for being the youngest ever contestant on The Great British Bakeoff. Since her “soggy bottoms” in Season 5, she’s gone on to be a positive role model for all aspiring home bakers. We especially love her work with Tearfund supports No Child Taken. This saw her travelling to Cambodia to teach women and girls how to bake. Helping to empower these communities to generate an income helps lower the risk of child trafficking.
4th prize – A fun oven mitt / pot holder set. Who doesn’t need another set of these in their kitchen?
The contest runs from 19 October until 11.59PM (SGT/UTC+8), 2 November 2016. The winners will be announced on 16 November 2016 right here on the blog and on Instagram (@we_bakelife).
